Reinventing Southern Gothic

Distorted portraits blend hunter and hunted, fiend and father, darkness and light, all through the lens of an artist who connects with an unseen future as much as his own heritage… both in approach and result. This is Jason Byron Nelson.

I’m fascinated by the merging of things that don’t play well together, whether it be ideas or mediums. I work in wood stains and acrylic paint with a touch of spray paint and various colored powders from metallics to charcoal.

I like these mediums because they don’t like each other. When I combine them, they immediately try to segregate and I lovingly remind them that we can all get over our differences and work as one.

Then there are the subjects and concepts within my work; these reflect my own sensibilities, which admittedly, much like the mediums I use, are often at odds with one another. And I’m okay with that.

About

Jason Byron Nelson

Illustrator, writer, fine artist…  Jason finds more than enough inspiration for his work in the diversity of everyday life. His methods and mediums are nearly as assorted as his inspirations. From pixels to spray paint, he has adapted several unconventional styles on the path to creating his own.

The Deerwalker Series

Nelson rarely stays on the same creative path for very long but his "Deerwalkers" have proved engaging for him and popular with buyers… enough that it's become his longest running series. Without going too deep into his mindset, the Deerwalker Series was a chance to explore a specific theme within Nelson's Southern heritage while clearly filtered through his own lens. The recipe is simple: A muted palette of soft whites and unruly wood stains; a vague horizon of thick, scratchy trees; and a deer… typically in a Sunday-best, vintage suit… walking from the forest, sometimes gazing upon it, in an effort to prepare for what lies ahead.

"As commissions go, it's my most requested. Folks like to pick a suit for their deer, to talk about where the deer is coming from, both literally and figuratively. It's fun; and because I barely wait for the paint to dry, I can usually deliver pretty quickly. I've done small ones, horizontal ones, and a giant, seven feet tall one."
